The Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare has said that the government has uncovered plots by some unscrupulous politicians from the opposition parties to disrupt judicial proceedings in Benin City tomorrow, Monday the 15th July 2024.
He made the observation at a press briefing earlier today in Benin City.
According to him, “It is on good record that tomorrow, being Monday the 15th of July 2024, some individuals are planning to disrupt judicial process in Benin City and we want to reiterate that we would not allow any group of persons to match towards the Courts for any reason whatsoever to harass or intimidate lawyers or judges or any person for that matter.
“All arms of Edo State government , including the judiciary must be allowed to perform their duty independently unrestricted or hindered
“We want to reiterate that we as a responsible government would not allow a disgruntled group of persons to constitute a nuisance by attacking lawyers or judges by preventing them from carrying out their constituted roles.
“This is an election year and the different political parties particularly the two major parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party are the only visible parties campaigning while the APC has a candidate that has been described by their own member as ” mute Candidate”
“That description is apt because no one has heard him speak on any policy direction and of course it is perculier with the APC as a party, as you can see the damage the APC led government at the federal level has brought upon Nigerians and Edo people must not allow a replication of such disastrous governance in Edo state.
“We are desirous of having a peaceful Edo state and would therefore not want anyone to be instigated into any form of violence against the judiciary and we therefore use this medium to urge parents and guardians to urge their children and wards to shun any inducement to take the laws into their hands”.
Also speaking at the Press briefing, the Special adviser on Media Project, Crusoe Osagie said it is on good record that the planned protest against the judiciary tomorrow is sponsored by opposition party.
According to him, ” we have it on good authority through the intelligence we have gathered in government that the protest against the judiciary, the judges, lawyers tomorrow is being sponsored by some unscrupulous politicians within the Labour Party and the All Progressives Congress (APC)
“We want to state without any equivocation that we will not allow it, as Security agencies are going to stand and protect the judiciary, protect our lawyers and judges and we want to call on our parents to be on the alert to prevent these unscrupulous elements from using their children and wards to achieve their cheap political gains and put their lives in danger as government will not spare any legal effort at ensuring the protection of the judiciary so as to ensure that the planned violence against the judiciary does not stand”.
